His political career began in 1997 after getting elected as a Councilor of Municipal Corporation of Delhi. With time, he held multiple senior positions.
In the parliament, Gupta's promotion as a speaker created a stir because over the last ten years of AAP rule, he has always been seen getting bundled into or out of the Delhi assembly.

One of these events was particularly shocking when assembly marshals were seen lifting Gupta out of the assembly room, mid-session while he attempted to fight back in 2015.
Previously, the newly elected members of the legislative assembly or MLAs were required to take an oath to mark the official opening of the first session of the newly elected Delhi assembly. The session wil continue until 27 February.
