The government of Uttarakhand has instituted a new policy whereby all staff members will have to register their marriages under the Unified Civil Code (UCC) that has recently come into force. Compliance with this order is mandatory, as highlighted by Chief Secretary Radha Raturi while issuing a circular to district magistrates and other departmental heads.

As per the new system, people who got married on or after March 26, 2010, are required to make an official marriage registration using the UCC code. For ease, district UCC nodal officers will now be able to register all employed married residents of the district for legitimizing their marriage.

As a measure to institutionalize this initiative, all districts will be required to send a status update report on the exercise every week, which will be reviewed by the home secretary on a regular basis, Raturi mentioned. Moreover, she also instructed that every government office shall appoint a nodal officer in the department of Marriage Registration to register members of the office.

The director of the Uttarakhand Information Technology Development Agency has been asked to provide necessary IT aid to the districts and departments to automatically submit sections on the complain portal for effective democratization of the UCC.

This move is perhaps one of the most ingressive in providing a uniform set of personal laws across the board in the Uttarakhand region and, as is clear, the government will not relax its agenda even with its staff members.
