More than half of U.S. adults approve of the job President Donald Trump is doing in his first month in office, according to a CBS News/YouGov poll published Sunday.

The survey, conducted Wednesday through Friday of last week, found that Trump had a 53% approval rating. The poll, which included 2,175 adults, has a margin of error of 2.5 percentage points.

Concerns Over Inflation and Trade Tariffs

Despite Trump’s post-election honeymoon period, many Americans remain concerned about his handling of inflation and economic policies.

  • 66% of respondents believe the administration is not doing enough to lower consumer prices.
  • This concern extends to Republicans, with nearly half of them agreeing that inflation needs more attention.

Trump’s trade policies are also facing skepticism:

  • 56% support the 10% tariffs on China imposed by Trump.
  • However, majorities oppose his plans to place 25% tariffs on Mexico and Canada, as well as future unspecified tariffs on European nations.

Elon Musk’s Influence on Government

The poll also revealed that 50% of Americans believe Elon Musk and his Department of Government Efficiency teams should have either “a lot” or “some” influence over government operations and spending. Among Republicans, that number jumps to 74%.

Comparing Trump’s Early Approval to Past Presidents

It’s common for presidents to start with high approval ratings as the public gives them a chance to lead. However, Trump’s numbers remain lower than his predecessors:

  • Joe Biden (2021): 57% approval in February.
  • Barack Obama (2009): 66% approval in January.
  • George W. Bush (2001): 59% approval in February.
  • Donald Trump (2017): 44% approval in January, the lowest of any president in 70 years of Gallup polling.

Views on Immigration and Foreign Policy

Trump’s immigration policies continue to divide Americans:

  • 59% approve of his plan to deport undocumented migrants.
  • 50% oppose his idea to detain them in large centers.

On foreign policy, his handling of the Israel-Hamas conflict has a 54% approval rating. However, nearly half (47%) of Americans oppose his proposal for the U.S. to take over Gaza.

As Trump’s presidency progresses, his approval rating will likely shift based on economic performance, foreign policy decisions, and domestic issues.
