Let us tell you that 63-year-old Mukhtar Ansari, who was a five-time MLA from Mau Sadar, died on 28 March 2024 in a hospital in Banda, Uttar Pradesh. After his health deteriorated in March, Mukhtar Ansari was taken from Banda District Jail to Rani Durgavati Medical College, where he died of a heart attack. Slow poison was given in jail- Afzal Ansari
Ghazipur MP and Mukhtar's elder brother Afzal Ansari had also alleged at that time that Mukhtar was given slow poison. Afzal had said- "Mukhtar had told that he was poisoned about 40 days ago and recently perhaps on 19 or 22 March 2024, it was done again, after which his condition deteriorated." Afzal had said that on March 21, on the day of digital hearing of a case in Barabanki court, Mukhtar's lawyer had filed a petition in the court in which it was alleged that his client was given 'slow poison' in jail due to which his condition is deteriorating.
Father had told me that he was being given slow poison- Umar Ansari
Mukhtar's son Umar Ansari alleged that his father was being given slow poison in jail. However, the authorities denied the allegation. Umar said, "My father had told us that he was being given 'slow poison'. Now the whole country knows about this.''
Mukhtar, who was in jail since 2005, had more than 60 criminal cases pending against him and was convicted in the murder case of BJP MLA Krishnanand Rai. Before his death, the son had approached the apex court in December 2023 and urged for direction to transfer his father to another jail outside Uttar Pradesh, fearing threat to his life. The state government had assured the bench in 2023 that if necessary, it would strengthen Ansari's security inside the Banda jail so that no harm comes to him.
During the hearing in the Supreme Court today, Additional Solicitor General KM Nataraj, appearing for the UP government, said that the documents would be provided to Omar. The bench noted that Ansari's postmortem had been conducted and a magisterial inquiry was also conducted later. It asked the state government to provide copies of the medical and investigation reports to Omar within two weeks, who could then file his reply within three weeks. Omar's petition said that when his mother approached the Allahabad High Court for Ansari's protection, the court had ordered enhanced security in May, 2024.
