Officials reported last Friday that the Maharashtra Cyber has filed a case against at least four Wikipedia editors for failing to remove “objectionable” portions about Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj from the publicly edited encyclopedia on the internet.

The nodal agency had issued a notification to the Wikimedia Foundation situated in California requesting that the objectionable content on Wikipedia be deleted. Wikimedia Foundation, a non-profit organization, is the parent organization of Wikipedia. In that notice, the Maharashtra Cyber agency had also argued that the Sambhaji Maharaj Wikipedia entry was factually incorrect and could endanger the law and order situation in the State, considering the great respect Sambhaji Maharaj, son of the Maratha empire founder Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, commands in India.

The notice stated that what is available on Wikipedia could create some level of agitation among his supporters. Since Wikimedia has not responded to the request of removing the content, the Maharashtra Cyber has booked at least four editors of Wikipedia under appropriate provisions of the IT Act, he stated. Wikipedia is a multilingual free content public self-service encyclopedia written and edited collaboratively by its users. A selected few can add material on this site, he explains. These concerns have arisen in the context of the new Hindi movie “Chhaava,” which depicts the life of Sambhaji Maharaj.
