The Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (MDoNER) is set to explore market opportunities for bamboo in both domestic and overseas markets. MDoNER Secretary Chanchal Kumar confirmed that the ministry is collaborating with Amazon and two other companies to promote the bamboo trade.
In addition to strengthening local bamboo markets, the ministry aims to export bamboo to neighboring countries, including Bangladesh and Myanmar.
38% of India's Bamboo Production Comes from North Eastern States
Union Minister for Communications and Development of North Eastern Region, Jyotiraditya M. Scindia, highlighted the significant role of the North Eastern states in bamboo production. Speaking at a roadshow in Chennai, he stated that nearly 38% of India's bamboo is produced in the North Eastern region.
Expanding into the Furniture Industry
Scindia emphasized the potential of Chennai's booming furniture industry to leverage North Eastern bamboo. "We can cultivate bamboo, process it, and manufacture furniture for domestic and international markets," he said.
MDoNER has initiated a project with Amazon and two other companies to integrate self-help groups (SHGs) into the bamboo supply chain. The initial phase focuses on Tripura and Nagaland, where complete end-to-end bamboo processing will take place.
Marketing and Export Strategy
Secretary Chanchal Kumar highlighted the importance of quality and branding in bamboo product marketing. The collaborating companies will assist SHGs in designing world-class bamboo furniture and boards, ensuring their products meet global standards.
"The objective is to aggregate bamboo products from farmers and deliver them to end users efficiently," Kumar stated. "The entire value chain must be optimized for better reach and profitability."
Targeting Global Markets
After securing a stronghold in the domestic market, the ministry plans to expand internationally. Kumar pointed out that the ultimate goal is to export bamboo products to Bangladesh, Thailand, Myanmar, and other international markets.
The North Eastern region, holding the largest bamboo resources in India, presents a great opportunity for Chennai’s furniture industry. The initiative aims to transform India’s bamboo industry by integrating local production with international trade, enhancing economic growth for North Eastern states.
