Doctors at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, have successfully performed a rare and complex surgery, giving a fresh start to a 17-year-old boy from Uttar Pradesh. The boy, who was born with four legs, had two normal legs while the extra pair was attached to his stomach. Medical experts identified this as a rare condition known as an "incomplete parasitic twin."
A Rare Medical Phenomenon – Only 42 Cases Worldwide
According to doctors, this condition arises when twins begin to develop in the womb, but one fails to fully form. As a result, some body parts of the underdeveloped twin attach to the surviving baby. This is an extremely rare occurrence, seen in only one out of 10 million births. So far, only 42 such cases have been recorded worldwide.
Surgery at AIIMS – A Life-Changing Transformation
Dr. Asuri Krishna, Additional Professor in AIIMS' Department of Surgery, shared that the boy hailed from Ballia district in Uttar Pradesh. He arrived at the hospital on January 28, concealing his extra legs under a cloth. After thorough medical evaluation, the team of doctors decided to proceed with the surgery. This marked AIIMS' first-ever operation of this nature. The complex procedure was a success, and now the boy can lead a normal life.
Physical and Emotional Challenges Overcome
Doctors revealed that the extra limbs were hindering the boy’s physical growth and could have caused complications in other organs. Additionally, he faced severe mental distress due to societal ridicule. The emotional toll was so intense that he was forced to drop out of school after Class 8.
Now, with the successful surgery, the young boy has a second chance at life, free from physical and emotional burdens. His story stands as a testament to the incredible advancements in medical science and the dedication of AIIMS doctors.
