He was seen portraying the role of Maratha warrior Tanhaji Malusare. He was one of the most fiercest general under Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and fought with utmost courage in order to capture back the Kondhana fort from the might Mughals. This character of his was masterfully brought to life by Ajay Devgan's powerful acting.

To this day, people remember his character. The story of the film was built around the winning of the Kondhana fort by Mughal emperor Aurangzeb in the 17th century. Shivaji Maharaj issued commands to Tanaji Malusare, who was determined to reclaim the fort. The Mughals had a massive army and the fort was heavily fortified. Tanaji used his strategic wit and valor to outsmart the Mughals and won.

Reports say that the budget for the movie was approximately 125 crores while it grossed around 332.8 crores in India. While worldwide, the film did a business of approximately 367.65 crore. The film won 16 awards including, Ajay Devgan’s National Award for Best Actor, Om Raut’s Best Director award, and Saif Ali Khan as Best Supporting Actor. \
In this battle, Tanhaji met his martyrdom but it was not in vain as the Marathas were able to win back the Kondhana Fort. In this film, alongside Ajay Devgan, were Saif Ali Khan, Sharad Kelkar, Kajol, and Neha Sharma.
Sharad Kelkar’s portrayal of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was received exceedingly well by the spectators. While we had Saif as the villain of the film, he too, for his Udaybhan Singh Rathore, performed remarkably. His efforts and talent earned him a great deal of respect as well.
