Suspense crime, Digital Desk : Even though two years have elapsed following the outbreak of ethnically motivated violence in Manipur on May 3, 2023, the memories are very much alive for the more than 70,000 internally displaced persons (IDPs). The conflict between Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities erupted claimed over 260 lives and rendered thousands more homeless. These people were shifted to already overcrowded relief camps and makeshift shelters. Attempts at normalcy have been made, but even these IDPs still seem to battle with hoping to make a return to their homes, grappling with a fragile peace.
Abstract
The Manipur region becomes the epicenter of socio-political violence impacting one or multiple ethnic groups. ii Manipur’s governance and government-formed non-state actors’ aggression towards Kukis and tribal ethnicity resulted in the massacre of the Kukis in June and July 2022. Ethnic tensions escalated in Manipur due to the imposition of President’s rule on the state, which combines executive oversight and military-enabled policing.
The Military Imposed State of Manipur V
The state of Manipur has been cited as one of the most violent places in the world. In contemporary political terms, the imposition of presidential rule with military enables order defies any form of basic human decency and politically labeled as the last attempts to cement coups. Internally Displaced People not only face violent combat and crossfire between Kukis and Government forces. Manipur’s Police force has also been intensified commutes on civilians since Kukis forces comb regions largely populated by tribal civilians. Culminating with the Kukis forced to flee for their lives describes precisely as ethnic cleansing.

Developing Violence and Threat Issues
Manipur continues to remain restless, even after declaring President's Rule in February 2024 and removing the then Chief Minister N Biren Singh. Groups with arms and their supporters have emerged in different regions and clashes have mobilised their respective narratives, neglecting to maintain the (in this case an) empathic focus towards ordinary people, especially IDPs. There is a rampant upsurge in positing by armed groups in the Imphal valley as well as extortion along roads in Kuki-claimed territory. Defunct militant groups are on the rise. These groups are mainly consist of school dropouts and uneducated teenagers.
Community Specifications and Political Deadlock
The violent rupture has simultaneously resulted in one-sided demands from opposing sides of the socio-political spectrum. Hill-based Kukis who stake claim on the dome are politely requesting from the center for a parachute, surrendering to their scheme. On the other hand, the Meiteis, who dominate the Imphal valley are demanding the implementation of National Register of Citizens (NRC) with sponsoring essentials of so called illegal immigrants. The intermixing of these contrarian prerequisites has made achieving a lasting solution cumbersome, thereby entrenching a majority of the IDPs into limbo.
