The wait is officially over for cricket fans across India. Just as the dust settles on the T20 World Cup, the focus is shifting back to the biggest domestic carnival on the planet the Indian Premier League. The official broadcaster, Star Sports, has finally confirmed that IPL 2026 will begin on March 28.
While the BCCI had originally discussed a March 26 start, the date has been pushed back slightly to ensure everyone from players to security teams is ready for what promises to be the longest season yet.
The Champions Return Home
In keeping with one of the league's most beloved traditions, the opening match will feature the defending champions, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). Even more special for the fans is the venue; after some uncertainty last year, the opening clash will take place at the iconic M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.
For the RCB "faithful," this is a big moment. The stadium has been cleared for full capacity after rigorous safety audits, meaning the "Sea of Red" will be back in full force to watch their team begin their title defense on home turf.
Why the Full Schedule is Still in "Wait and Watch" Mode
If you're looking for the full fixture list, you might have to wait a few more days. The BCCI is currently coordinating with the Election Commission. Since several states—including West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, and Assam—are heading into assembly elections, the tournament schedule will likely be released in two phases.
The first phase will cover the opening 15 to 20 days, with the remaining matches finalized once the polling dates are locked in. It’s a logistical puzzle, but one the IPL organizers have mastered over the years.
A Marathon Season
Get ready for even more cricket. IPL 2026 is officially expanding to 84 matches, up from the previous 74. This means more double-headers, more prime-time drama, and a tournament that will stretch all the way to May 31.
Whether you’re rooting for RCB to go back-to-back or hoping for a comeback from the heavyweights like MI and CSK, the countdown has officially begun.
