In a surprising climatic shift, Uttarakhand is experiencing an early onset of summer-like conditions this February. According to the latest reports from the Meteorological Center, Dehradun, temperatures across the hill state have soared 4 to 6 degrees Celsius above the seasonal normal, leaving residents and tourists feeling an unexpected afternoon heat.

Here is a detailed breakdown of the current weather scenario in Uttarakhand:

1. Record-Breaking Warmth in the Plains

The plains of Uttarakhand, including Dehradun, Haridwar, and Udham Singh Nagar, are witnessing a rapid climb in mercury.

Dehradun: The maximum temperature has been hovering around 26°C to 28°C, which is significantly higher than the usual mid-February average.

Direct Sunlight: Clear skies and a lack of significant Western Disturbances have allowed the sun to beat down directly, making the afternoons feel like late March or April.

2. Melting Snow in the Mountains

The heat is not restricted to the plains. Even high-altitude regions like Mussorie, Nainital, and Mukteshwar are seeing temperatures rise.

The early heat is causing concern regarding the rapid melting of the remaining winter snow, which could impact the water table and local agriculture (especially apple and stone fruit crops) that require a specific "chilling period."

3. The "Western Disturbance" Factor

Meteorologists attribute this unusual warmth to the absence of active Western Disturbances. Usually, February sees multiple cycles of rain and snow that keep the temperatures in check. This year, the weather has remained largely dry and stable, allowing local heat to build up without the cooling effect of mountain showers.

4. Health Risks: The Day-Night Temperature Gap

While the days are unusually warm, the nights and early mornings remain relatively cool. This wide diurnal temperature variation (the difference between day and night temperatures) is leading to an increase in viral infections, coughs, and colds across the state. Health experts are advising residents to stay hydrated and be cautious with clothing as the temperature drops sharply after sunset.

5. Forecast for the Coming Week

The IMD predicts that this trend of clear skies and dry weather will continue for the next 4–5 days. No significant rain or snowfall is expected in the lower reaches, although a very weak disturbance might bring light clouds to the higher peaks of Chamoli and Uttarkashi towards the weekend.
