The trend of owning "VIP" or fancy vehicle registration numbers is soaring in Bihar, with the state government generating approximately ₹6 crore in revenue from e-auctions in just the last two and a half months.

According to Transport Minister Shravan Kumar, the e-auction conducted between December 1, 2025, and February 13, 2026, saw 4,117 vehicle owners securing their preferred numbers.

Patna: The Hub of VIP Numbers

The state capital, Patna, remains the undisputed leader in this trend, accounting for nearly half of the total revenue generated.

Patna Revenue: ₹2.46 crore

Muzaffarpur: ₹52.17 lakh

Gaya: ₹41 lakh

Purnea: ₹33.53 lakh

In contrast, districts like Khagaria (₹93,500) and Shivhar (₹52,000) showed the least interest in fancy registration numbers.

Most Coveted Numbers & Categories

The transport department has categorized VIP numbers into five levels (A, B, C, D, and E).

Category A (The Elite List): Includes numbers like 0001, 0003, 0005, 0007, and 0009.

Price: For private vehicles, the base price for these top-tier numbers is ₹1 lakh. For commercial vehicles, the cost is around ₹35,000.

Auction Process: If there are multiple bidders for a single number, it is awarded to the highest bidder through the department's official online portal.

How to Apply?

Vehicle owners can register on the transport department’s official website, choose their desired number from the available list, and participate in the e-auction. The system was introduced to ensure transparency and maximize revenue for the state exchequer.
