In an attempt to blend classic artistry with modern technology, a new AI-generated music video for Jagjit Singh's timeless ghazal, "Koi Fariyaad," has sparked a wave of disappointment and anger among fans. The iconic song, celebrated for its profound emotional depth, was given a visual reimagining that many have slammed as "soulless" and a disservice to the legendary singer's memory.
The new video, released by T-Series, keeps Jagjit Singh's original vocals intact but pairs them with a stop-motion visual style featuring characters that viewers described as "eerily not-human.The project, directed by Shreya Mehrotra and Gourov Dasgupta, was quickly met with a flood of negative comments online.
Fans did not hold back their criticism, with many expressing that the technology failed to capture the heartbreaking essence of the ghazal. "Soulless BS," one user bluntly commented, a sentiment that echoed across social media platforms.Others chimed in with remarks like, "what a joke," and lamented that the experiment had turned a “sad song into a comedy song.” Many felt that the video was a poor attempt to cash in on a classic, with one person commenting, “T series Short Of Money. Old Songs And AI Videos.”The consensus was clear: the AI-generated visuals felt disconnected from the song's powerful core.
The Soul of the Original
The backlash is perhaps best understood by looking back at the creation of the original song for the 2001 film Tum Bin. Director Anubhav Sinha has previously shared the painstaking process behind the ghazal. The lyricist, Faaiz Anwar, was tasked with creating a ghazal that would be central to the film's narrative. Sinha revealed that he rejected 81 couplets before finally hearing the lines that would become iconic: "Ek lamhe mein simat aaya hai sadiyon ka safar. Zindagi tez bahut tez chali ho jaise." (A journey of centuries has been summed up in a moment. As if life has moved very, very fast.)
Even the maestro, Jagjit Singh, was not easily satisfied with his own rendition. He reportedly re-recorded the song several times to perfectly capture the pain and longing required.This dedication from the artists—the months of writing, the multiple recording sessions—infused the song with a deep, human touch that fans feel is sacred.
