Suspense crime, Digital Desk : The former president of South Korea Yoon Suk Yeol has declared that he will leave the People Power Party on Saturday. This announcement was made via his Facebook page just a few weeks before the presidential elections set for June 3.
Understanding the Motivation
The People Power Party is facing a major challenge in the polls, and this seems to be Yoon’s motivation. Its presidential candidate Kim Moon-soo lags far behind the liberal Democratic Party presidential candidate Lee Jae-myung. Kim only holds 29 percent support from the public while Lee is sitting at 51 percent according to a Gallup Korea poll released on Friday.
Internal Party Pressure
There has been pressure for Yoon to step down due to the backlash he faced after his martial law envisioning back in December. His impeachment followed, and many inside the party felt his stepping down could fetch them some moderate voters.
What Yoon Stated
Yoon posted: “I am leaving the People Power Party to live up to my responsibility to protect the free Republic of Korea” on social media. He went on to ask citizens to vote for Kim Moon-soo while making sure to state his support for the campaign promising presidential alignment despite the resignation.
