US-Iran Tensions Boil Over: Trump Issues Fresh Threats Amid Damietta Port Attack and Reports of Chinese Arms Sales
The already volatile situation in the Middle East has sharply deteriorated following fresh military escalations between the United States and Iran. Following a brazen ballistic missile attack by Iran targeting US forces stationed in the region, the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed launching precision retaliatory strikes against Iranian military capabilities beginning at 8 p.m. ET on Wednesday.
Simultaneously, the conflict appears to be dangerously spilling out of the Gulf theatre. A shocking incident occurred at Egypt's Mediterranean port of Damietta, where the US-owned floating gas storage tanker Energos Winter was hit by a drone strike while unloading cargo. The attack triggered a massive fire that subsequently spread to another vessel, the Gaslog Salem. While the Egyptian Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources rapidly confirmed the blaze and stated that it was successfully brought under control with zero casualties, they stopped short of officially attributing the cause to a drone strike.
Trump’s Stern Warning: "They Know It's Coming"
Addressing the press from the Oval Office, US President Donald Trump delivered an ominous warning to Tehran. Acknowledging that he had been fully briefed on the alarming explosion at the Damietta port, Trump did not mince his words regarding the impending US military response.
“They know it’s coming,” Trump declared, vowing that Washington plans to strike Tehran "very hard" and asserting firmly that “it’s our turn to hit them.”
Despite his aggressive rhetoric and promises of kinetic action, Trump left a slight window open for future de-escalation. “We’ll see if we get there with an agreement at some point,” he added, hinting that a diplomatic off-ramp might still be possible amidst the raining missiles.
The Chinese Connection: 400 Missiles En Route to Tehran?
Adding massive fuel to the geopolitical fire are alarming international reports suggesting that Iran is weeks away from receiving a massive shipment of advanced weaponry from China. According to Reuters, Tehran is finalising a $60-70 million deal to acquire between 300 and 400 Chinese-manufactured man-portable air defence systems (MANPADS), specifically the QW-12 and FN-16 shoulder-fired missiles, to rebuild its battered air defence network rapidly.
When questioned about this alleged arms transfer during his Oval Office interaction, President Trump expressed profound disappointment, heavily leaning on personal assurances previously given by Chinese President Xi Jinping.
"Well, that would be surprising," Trump told the assembled reporters. "I mean, things like that happen, but that would be surprising. He (Xi) told me very strongly he wouldn’t partake, and he knows I’d be quite disappointed."
While the Chinese Foreign Ministry has vehemently dismissed the reports as "completely groundless," Western intelligence sources indicate the deal is moving forward, potentially utilising overland transit routes through Pakistan to deliver the systems. If true, this massive influx of highly mobile, infrared-guided missiles could significantly complicate future US and Israeli aerial operations against Iranian targets.
