Transmission Route: The amoeba enters the body exclusively through the nose when contaminated water is forced upward—typically while swimming or diving. It cannot be contracted by swallowing contaminated water or transmitted from person to person.
Environment: The organism thrives in warm freshwater and is absent from saltwater environments as well as properly chlorinated swimming pools.
Rapid Progression: Early symptoms often mimic common illnesses, including severe headache, fever, nausea, and vomiting. As the infection advances, it rapidly leads to stiff neck, seizures, confusion, and coma, usually manifesting within one to twelve days of exposure.
