Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Are Reportedly Returning to the UK This Month, Six Years After Stepping Back From Royal Duties

Prince Harry and his wife, Meghan Markle, are planning a permanent move back to Britain this month, marking a major milestone six years after they officially stepped down from their senior royal duties and relocated to the United States, according to recent media reports.

Moving Back to the UK With Children

According to reports from People magazine and British newspaper The Telegraph, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are preparing to transition their lives from California back to the UK along with their children—7-year-old son, Prince Archie, and 5-year-old daughter, Princess Lilibet. Reports indicate that the children are set to begin school in Britain this September. While neither Buckingham Palace nor Prince Harry’s official spokesperson has issued an official statement regarding the move, sources close to the couple have confirmed the development.

Status as Non-Working Royals and Living Arrangements

As agreed upon with the late Queen Elizabeth II when the couple stepped down from their official duties in March 2020, Harry and Meghan will continue to remain non-working royals. According to The Telegraph, upon their return, they will not reside in any official royal residences.

Reflecting on their journey, the couple married in a widely watched ceremony at Windsor Castle in 2018. However, cracks in their relationship with the broader royal family quickly surfaced, leading to their dramatic exit from royal life two years later and their subsequent relocation to a multimillion-dollar estate in Montecito, near Santa Barbara, California.

Past Tensions and Recent Thawing of Relations

In the years following their move, both Harry and Meghan openly expressed grievances against the monarchy through high-profile television interviews, a Netflix docuseries, and Prince Harry's memoir, Spare. Notably, in a 2021 interview with Oprah Winfrey, Meghan shared concerns raised within the family regarding their son's skin tone—allegations that Prince William, Harry's older brother, publicly denied. Tensions were further exacerbated by public remarks directed at King Charles and Prince William, alongside disputes over official security provisions in the UK.

However, signs of reconciliation have begun to emerge. Relations between Prince Harry and his father, King Charles, appeared to thaw following the King's cancer diagnosis and successful treatment trajectory. Last month, Harry, Meghan, and their children visited Britain, allowing King Charles to spend time with his grandchildren for the first time since 2022. While rapport with the monarch has seen positive steps forward, communication and ties with Prince William remain minimal.
