NASA Report Reveals India is a 'Warming Hole': Global Warming Rate in India Slowest in the World

Amid ongoing global concerns over rising temperatures and shattered heat records worldwide, a groundbreaking research report from NASA has revealed that India is experiencing the slowest rate of heat increase in the world. Climate scientists have termed this unique climate phenomenon a "warming hole," which is currently shielding the region from the extreme impacts of global warming seen elsewhere on the planet.

Striking Differences in Global Temperature Trends

According to data compiled by NASA, the Earth's average global temperature has risen by approximately 1.4 degrees Celsius since 1980. In sharp contrast, India has recorded a temperature increase of less than 0.9 degrees Celsius since the beginning of the 20th century.

When observing NASA climate maps, while regions across Europe, the Middle East, and parts of Asia glow in deep red and orange shades indicating intense heat stress, parts of India appear in comparatively milder yellow and white tones.

Scientific Reasons Behind India’s Temperature Control

Climate experts attribute this natural temperature regulation to a couple of key factors:

Widespread Irrigation: Extensive agricultural irrigation across the plains of northern India significantly increases moisture content in the lower atmosphere, which naturally helps suppress local surface temperatures.

Aerosol and Pollution Reflection: Airborne particulate matter and pollution particles act to reflect a portion of incoming solar radiation back into space, reducing the overall heat load on the surface.

Ongoing Heavy Rainfall and Weather Warnings

While the temperature trends offer some environmental relief, active monsoon conditions continue to impact various parts of the country. Meteorological authorities have issued heavy to very heavy rainfall warnings across roughly 18 states, including Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Uttarakhand, and regions of the Northeast, accompanied by gusty winds and thunderstorms.

Continuous heavy spells in recent days have also prompted flash flood alerts for vulnerable low-lying areas in Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, and Jammu and Kashmir, keeping disaster management teams on high alert.
