A horrific tragedy has shaken the community of Billings, Montana, where a family gathering turned into an unimaginable massacre. A gunman systematically opened fire and killed eight of his own relatives—including four children spanning four generations, from a 7-year-old girl to a 90-year-old family elder—before taking his own life in a devastating murder-suicide that also engulfed the residence in flames.
Sunday Dinner Turns Into Mass Shooting
According to details shared by a family spokesperson with The Associated Press, the horrific incident unfolded during a Sunday family dinner at a residential home in Billings.
Jennifer Mercer, who organized an online fundraiser to assist with funeral arrangements and family support, confirmed that the victims belonged to four generations of a mixed family. The youngest victim was a 7-year-old girl, while the eldest was a great-grandmother in her nineties.
Police Response and Neighbor Accounts
Local law enforcement agencies responded to emergency calls at the property on Sunday evening. Prior to the house becoming fully engulfed in roaring flames, nearby residents reported hearing loud popping sounds resembling fireworks coming from the rear of the property.
Neighbors quickly realized the gravity of the situation when gunfire erupted. David Hiller, a resident living nearby, recounted hearing noises around 6:00 PM on Sunday before receiving a frantic call from a neighbor reporting an active shooting. Upon stepping outside, Hiller witnessed heavily armed police officers in tactical gear taking strategic cover behind vehicles as thick plumes of black smoke billowed from the burning home.
Police later confirmed multiple fatalities at the scene, including the gunman, who died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Authorities have launched a comprehensive investigation to determine the underlying motives behind one of the most shocking domestic tragedies in the region's recent history.
