Donald Trump Praises India's Electoral System, Urges Mandatory Voter IDs and Cites Conversation with CEC Gyanesh Kumar
In a strong push for electoral reform in the United States, US President Donald Trump has publicly praised India’s massive and meticulously organized democratic voting apparatus. Drawing direct comparisons during a recent statement, Trump advocated for making strict voter identification mandatory across American federal elections, pointing to India's successful execution of polls involving hundreds of millions of voters with near-zero reliance on postal voting.
Citing CEC Gyanesh Kumar and India’s Massive Voter Turnout
Taking to social media platform Truth Social, President Trump shared details of his interaction regarding global electoral practices. He revealed that India's Chief Election Commissioner (CEC), Gyanesh Kumar, had raised a compelling question regarding American polling methods, asking how the US could conduct elections without requiring valid photo identification for every citizen.
Highlighting the sheer scale of Indian democracy, Trump noted that during the nation's recent general elections, over 646 million (64.6 crore) citizens cast their votes. Remarkably, less than one percent of the total votes were cast via postal ballots, with the vast, foolproof system mandating a verified photo identity document for every single participant.
Push for the 'Save America Act' in Congress
Emulating the transparency and security demonstrated by nations like India and Brazil—which integrate robust identification and biometric verification—President Trump strongly urged the US Congress to swiftly pass the Save America Act. This proposed legislation aims to overhaul federal elections by making strict proof of citizenship and valid photo identification mandatory, ensuring that only verified US citizens participate in the democratic process.
The White House emphasized that while the US has historically relied heavily on self-declaration systems for voter registration, adopting stringent voter-ID standards modeled after international benchmarks will dramatically enhance the integrity, security, and public trust in American election results.
