In a significant strategic development impacting regional security dynamics, Bangladesh has officially launched the "Shimanto School of Surveillance and Drone Warfare" located near the international border with India. Inaugurated by Bangladesh Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed at the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) headquarters in Sylhet, the newly established facility is designed to train military and security personnel in advanced unmanned aerial systems. While Dhaka maintains that the school aims to curb cross-border smuggling, illegal trafficking, and narcotics, its strategic proximity to the Indian frontier has drawn close attention from defense analysts.
Strategic Location and Advanced Night-Vision Capabilities
Situated in Sylhet—roughly fifty-five kilometers from the India-Bangladesh border and approximately one hundred fifteen kilometers south of शिलांग, the capital of मेघालय—the specialized training academy is equipped to transform regional surveillance operations. During the inaugural ceremony, Border Guard Bangladesh personnel demonstrated tactical operations utilizing aerial tech. Officials emphasized that the newly integrated drones feature high-grade night-vision and thermal imaging technology, enabling round-the-clock monitoring across dense forests and rugged terrain where traditional ground patrolling presents severe logistical challenges.
Addressing Long-Standing Security Complexities Along the 4,096-Km Border
The Border Guard Bangladesh currently oversees the extensive 4,096.7-kilometer international boundary shared with India, a frontier historically marked by complex security challenges. While India has successfully fenced over 3,200 kilometers of the international boundary, roughly 860 kilometers remain unfenced, including about 170 kilometers of challenging riverine and marshy terrain. These open and riverine segments have frequently served as transit points for illegal crossings, contraband smuggling, and security friction between agencies. Dhaka's deployment of drone warfare training underscores an aggressive push toward modernizing its frontier management infrastructure.
