UP: How beneficial is the scholarship scheme for backward class students, how did Prayagraj come first?

The Yogi government's scholarship schemes have proven highly effective in providing financial assistance for higher education, especially to students from backward classes. The government's Post-Matric Scholarship/Fee Reimbursement Scheme for Backward Classes has emerged as a new ray of hope for millions of students. Prayagraj district ranks first in the state in terms of the number of beneficiaries.
Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, has the highest number of scholarships, with over 1.69 lakh students receiving the scholarship. This scheme provides a strong foundation for students from economically disadvantaged families to pursue education. This initiative by the Yogi government has directly benefited millions of families, making the path to higher education easier for students.
Over 1.34 lakh students received scholarships in Ghazipur
In the year 2025-26, scholarships were awarded to over 2.7 million students under the Backward Classes Post-Matric Scholarship Scheme. In Prayagraj, 1,69,489 students received scholarships. Ghazipur district ranked second after Prayagraj, with over 1.34 lakh students receiving scholarships. Azamgarh saw over 1.19 lakh students benefiting from the scheme. Similarly, in Jaunpur, over 1.15 lakh students benefited from the scheme, while in Varanasi, 88,859 students received scholarships. These figures indicate that the scholarship scheme is having a widespread impact in various districts of the state.
Along with students, transgender individuals also got help.
Looking at scholarship distribution data, 472,764 female students have been awarded scholarships in grades 11-12. 380,667 male students and two transgender individuals have also received scholarships. In higher education, 1,001,084 female students, 931,906 male students, and eight transgender individuals have received scholarships. The Post-Matric Scholarship Scheme is not limited to the intermediate level, but also covers higher education and professional courses. Students in grades 11 and 12, as well as those pursuing professional courses like B.Tech, MBBS, MBA, and BA, B.Sc, B.Com, ITI, and Polytechnic, are also receiving scholarships.
Scholarship distribution process made transparent and simple
The primary objective of this scheme is to provide children from economically disadvantaged families with an opportunity to pursue education. Students whose parents' annual income is ₹2 lakh or less are eligible for the scheme. Under the leadership of the Chief Minister, the Yogi government has made the scholarship distribution process completely transparent and simple. Students apply online on the Scholarship Management System website, making the process faster and easier. Upon approval, scholarship funds are transferred directly to the beneficiaries' bank accounts.
The benefits of the scholarship scheme are reaching a large number of students.
Umesh Pratap Singh, Director of the Backward Classes Welfare Department, stated that the Yogi government's goal is to ensure that no student in the state is deprived of education due to financial constraints. The benefits of these schemes are reaching a large number of students and other eligible groups. He explained that the state government is working with full commitment to ensure that education reaches every individual in society. The objective of the Post-Matric Scholarship Scheme is to provide strong financial support to students from economically weaker sections to advance in education.
