Starting August 1, 2026, the Uttar Pradesh Transport Department has officially discontinued traditional paper-based Registration Certificates (RCs). In a major digital upgrade, all new and existing vehicle owners will now be issued an advanced Smart RC, visually resembling an ATM or credit card. Equipped with a microchip and a QR code, this new smart card is designed to significantly enhance security, prevent forgery, and streamline the document verification process across the state.
What Makes the New Smart RC Special?
The transition to Smart RCs eliminates the constant fear of paper documents tearing, fading, or getting damaged by water. The new ATM-sized card easily fits into a regular wallet and comes packed with highly secure, encrypted technology:
Encrypted Microchip: The embedded electronic chip securely stores vital vehicle information in an encrypted format, including the engine number, chassis number, fuel type, and the owner's name and address. This makes it nearly impossible for forgery syndicates to alter data or create fake vehicle documents.
Quick QR Code Verification: Traffic police and transport officials will no longer need to type lengthy registration numbers during routine road inspections manually. By simply scanning the QR code, officials can instantly access real-time data regarding the vehicle's insurance status, PUC (Pollution Under Control) certificate, and tax payments.
How to Apply for a Smart RC Online (Step-by-Step)
While all newly purchased vehicles will automatically come with a Smart RC, existing vehicle owners who currently hold a paper RC can easily upgrade to the new smart card from the comfort of their homes.
Here is how you can apply for your Smart RC using the official Vahan Portal:
Visit the Vahan Portal: Open the official Vahan website (parivahan.gov.in) on your smartphone or laptop.
Select Your State: Choose 'Uttar Pradesh' and select your respective RTO office, or simply proceed by entering your vehicle's registration number.
Choose the Service: Navigate to the 'RC Related Services' section and click on the Issue of Smart Card or Duplicate RC option.
Verify Details: Enter your vehicle's exact registration number and the last five digits of your chassis number to pull up your records.
OTP Authentication: An OTP will be sent to your linked and registered mobile number. Enter the OTP to verify your identity successfully.
Pay the Processing Fee: Complete the government-mandated processing fee payment online using UPI, Net Banking, or a Debit/Credit card.
Save Your Receipt: After a successful transaction, download the payment receipt and the application form PDF for your records.
Once the respective RTO completes the digital verification of your application and submitted documents, your brand-new Smart RC card will be printed and dispatched directly to your registered home address via Speed Post.
