Dawn Raids Spark Chaos: Villagers Hold JE Hostage in Scorching Heat Over Midnight Power Inspections

Post

Tensions reached a boiling point in Uttar Pradesh as a late-night anti-theft drive by the electricity department triggered a massive public outcry. Residents, already frustrated by erratic power supply during the ongoing summer heatwave, were outraged when departmental teams began conducting door-to-door raids between 3:00 AM and 4:00 AM. The situation escalated quickly in Nirpuda village, where angry locals surrounded the power station, leading to a dramatic confrontation where a Junior Engineer (JE) was held hostage and forced to sit in the blistering sun for over an hour.

Midnight Raids vs. Daytime Power Woes

The confrontation stems from a deep-seated grievance among the local farming community regarding the department's priorities. Villagers claimed that while the electricity supply remains woefully inadequate—with some feeders allegedly non-functional for days and repairs delayed throughout the night—the department manages to mobilize entire teams for "surprise" raids at dawn. "We get only three to four hours of power, and when wires snap, the staff is nowhere to be found. Yet, they arrive in the dark of night to inspect our homes," one disgruntled villager remarked, highlighting the perceived double standard.

Accusations and Confrontation

The situation turned volatile when farmers gathered at the power station to protest the timing and manner of the inspections. Allegations surfaced claiming that officials were not just checking for bypassed meters but were also pressuring residents to clear outstanding dues under threat of disconnection, with some villagers even alleging that departmental staff were soliciting bribes. During the standoff, JE Santosh Kumar was cornered and made to sit in the open sun as a form of protest against the department's aggressive tactics. Order was only restored after local police intervened to mediate between the department officials and the irate crowd.

The Department’s Stance

In his defense, JE Santosh Kumar dismissed the bribery allegations as "baseless," asserting that the night-time raids were carried out under strict instructions from senior officials to curb rampant power theft. The department maintains that many consumers bypass smart meters under the cover of darkness, necessitating unconventional inspection hours to catch offenders. Meanwhile, local SDO Ombir Singh stated he was unaware of the hostage situation as it unfolded. With the villagers now calling for a massive panchayat meeting on Thursday to further protest the department's actions, the standoff between the residents of Nirpuda and the electricity board appears far from over.
