During his state visit to the UK, U.S. President Donald Trump offered some direct, and rather blunt, advice to British Prime Minister Keir Starmer on how to handle illegal immigration: “use the military if necessary.”

The striking recommendation came during a joint press conference at Chequers, the Prime Minister's country residence, where the two leaders addressed a range of global issues. When asked what counsel he would give the UK on tackling small boat crossings, Trump didn't hold back.

He drew parallels to the situation at the U.S. border, stating, "You have people coming in, and I told the Prime Minister I would stop it." He went on to say, “It doesn't matter if you call out the military, it doesn't matter what means you use, but it's going to... destroy countries from within.”

Trump's straightforward advice highlights a hardline approach to immigration, a cornerstone of his own political platform.

In response, Prime Minister Keir Starmer pointed to his government's own efforts, noting a recent returns deal with France He mentioned that the first migrant had been sent back to France under this new agreement just that morning, describing it as an "important step forward" and "proof of concept" that the system can work.

Starmer acknowledged that illegal immigration is a challenge across Europe and emphasized that his government has deported over 35,000 people, the highest number in a decade While the two leaders found common ground on the need to address the issue, their proposed methods revealed a distinct difference in approach.
