As he criticized China, India, and the EU, U.S. President Donald Trump once again doubled down on his policy pertaining to trade tariffs. Trump’s statement suggested that his administration is moving towards a more confrontational position against those who set tariffs on the U.S. market. “Other countries have used tariffs against us for decades and now it is our turn to start using them,” he told a joint session of U.S. Congress.

Returning to New Delhi, Trump exclaimed, “The 100% auto tariffs we face from India are unreasonable...the system was never fair for the US...If, on April 2, they impose tariffs on us, we will also impose tariffs on the other countries that we will receive our goods from ... we’ll impose taxes both ways."

“If they restrict access to their market through methods that don’t require spending, we will in turn deny access to our market through methods that don’t require spending as well."

Trump took a victory lap, referring to one of the addresses he gave to Congress on a Tuesday, during which he faced boos and shout-outs from some members of the Democratic party who stood up and walked out mid-speech to protest.

This intense party concentration anger was a marker of the disorder that has trailed just his first six weeks as American president where he has already attempted altering the country’s foreign relations, starting a trade conflict with former partners, and slicing the government employment rate.

The address, which was his first since early January and made a few weeks post his inauguration, completely bought to an end two days of great distress for the stock exchange which Trump caused by placing heavy new taxes on China, Mexico, Canada, and Chinese goods.
