The Trump administration has released a new batch of unredacted material related to the 1963 assassination of former U.S. President John F. Kennedy. These newly disclosed documents, part of a larger set of over 80,000 files, have sparked renewed interest in the event, which continues to be the subject of widespread conspiracy theories even decades later.

While no major revelations are expected from the documents, some statements attributed to former CIA agent Gary Underhill are likely to reignite speculation about potential involvement by the CIA in Kennedy's assassination.

Release of JFK Assassination Documents Fulfills Trump’s Transparency Promise

The release of these files, which includes electronic copies now available on the National Archives website, fulfills a campaign promise made by Donald Trump to provide more transparency about the circumstances surrounding Kennedy's killing. The first wave of documents was published on March 18, 2024.

The files mention Gary Underhill, a former CIA agent who, according to the documents, was found dead less than six months after alleging CIA involvement in the assassination. Underhill reportedly said that a “small clique within the CIA” was responsible for the killing of Kennedy.

Who Was Gary Underhill?

Gary Underhill was a World War II intelligence agent who gained recognition as an expert in limited warfare and small arms. He was also a researcher and writer on military matters, with close connections to high-ranking CIA officials. The documents reveal that Underhill was well-known among Pentagon officials, many of whom considered him a trusted resource.

Underhill was found shot to death on May 8, 1964 in his Washington apartment, with the coroner ruling the death a suicide. However, the documents cast doubt on this conclusion, suggesting that the idea of suicide is far from convincing. According to the files, Underhill’s body was found by his collaborator, Asher Brynes, who reported that he had been shot behind the left ear, with an automatic pistol under his left side — an odd detail, given that Underhill was right-handed.

Underhill's Shocking Claims About the CIA’s Role in JFK's Assassination

The documents cite Underhill as saying that a small clique within the CIA was responsible for Kennedy’s assassination. Underhill reportedly confided to friends that he was afraid for his life and would have to leave the country because he feared for his safety after making these claims.

According to the files, Underhill described the group responsible for the assassination as “a corrupt element every bit as ruthless — and more efficient — than the mafia.”

These claims align with theories that have been circulating for decades, suggesting that certain CIA officers involved in anti-Castro operations had motives to target Kennedy. The documents also note that Kennedy was aware that something was amiss, and was allegedly killed before he could expose the group behind the conspiracy.

JFK Assassination and the Warren Commission's Findings

On November 22, 1963, President John F. Kennedy was fatally shot while riding in a motorcade through Dealey Plaza in Dallas. Lee Harvey Oswald, a 24-year-old Marine veteran who had defected to the Soviet Union, was arrested after being accused of the assassination. He was apprehended after allegedly firing from the sixth floor of the Texas School Book Depository building.

In the aftermath, the Warren Commission, appointed by President Lyndon B. Johnson, concluded that Oswald acted alone in the assassination, with no conspiracy involved. However, statements from Gary Underhill now cast doubt on the Warren Commission’s findings, potentially fueling further speculation about the true events behind JFK's death.

Impact of Underhill's Allegations on Conspiracy Theories

Underhill’s claims, now resurfacing with the release of these documents, will likely reignite conspiracy theories questioning the official narrative of JFK’s assassination. The theory that a CIA faction may have been involved has long been a focal point of alternative explanations, and the new revelations only add to the mystery surrounding Kennedy's death.
