TikTok, the widely used video-sharing app, is on the brink of a major shift in the U.S. As an April 5 deadline approaches, a range of American companies are scrambling to acquire the platform amid threats of a nationwide ban. The U.S. government has ordered TikTok’s parent company ByteDance to sell its U.S. operations or face removal from app stores and digital platforms across the country.

Who’s in the Race?

Leading the list of potential buyers are Amazon and Oracle. Amazon reportedly wants to acquire all of TikTok but is not currently being taken seriously by all parties. Oracle, on the other hand, has been engaged in ongoing discussions with U.S. government officials regarding data security and operational control.

AppLovin, a mobile tech company, has also made a move, reaching out to billionaire Steve Wynn to back its bid. AppLovin claims it can meet the government's data protection standards. Microsoft, which had previously attempted to buy TikTok in 2020, is once again being considered, along with Walmart, AI firm Perplexity, video platform Rumble, and YouTuber MrBeast.

What Sparked the Sale?

Concerns about national security have been at the heart of the TikTok controversy. U.S. lawmakers have long feared that ByteDance’s Chinese roots could allow the Chinese government access to American user data. Despite TikTok’s repeated denials, reports have accused the company of mishandling data, including tracking U.S. journalists and storing financial records overseas.

To address these fears, a law passed last year under former President Joe Biden requires TikTok to sell its U.S. operations or face a full ban. Former President Donald Trump is now directly involved in ongoing talks and may consider extending the deadline.

What Happens If No Deal is Reached?

If TikTok is not sold by April 5, the platform could be banned in the U.S., impacting millions of users and content creators. However, the government may choose to extend the deadline if negotiations are progressing. The final decision will depend on how quickly a viable buyer is approved and whether national security concerns can be fully addressed.
