Suspense crime, Digital Desk : It was always going to be the case that fans would get excited at the prospect of watching Kamal Haasan star alongside Mani Ratnam, but the former’s expectations on the film’s box office collection seem a bit ambitious as well. The movie has only managed to recoup a modest ₹17 crore in nett collections on day one itself.

Thug Life’s best performance came from Tamil Nadu which alone contributed ₹15.4 crore. Through the addition of Indian telugu speaking states, ₹1.5 crore was added to the film’s collection alongside a measly ₹10 lakh contribution from the hindi belt. The film did not open in Karnataka due to the ongoing controversy related to Haasan’s comments on the Kannada language which is likely revenue impact.

As for the Box Office numbers, these might seem noteworthy but certainly not for this industry where kamal has recently set his standards with a benchmark. His other film releases include Indian 2, Vikram and the amount of 25.6, 32.05, and 17 crore respectively.

Aside from the spectacular visuals, the pacing fell victim to scrutiny right alongside the story in what was dubbed “emotionless” by the fans, lacking the depth expected from Ratnam. All of which makes sense given the mixed reception of Thug Life.

Filmyzilla, Tamilrockerz, and Movierulez have leaked the pirated versions within hrs of the movie’s release. Seeing how the film was meant to be released on Box Office collections further this might make an impact, even though right now it makes no difference.

However, the robust reception for the movie in Tamil Nadu, as well as the legacy of the Haasan-Ratnam partnership, might allow the film to retain its box office collection over the coming days.
