If you're a fan of the Conjuring series, you know the drill by now: a terrified family, a malevolent spirit, and Ed and Lorraine Warren showing up to save the day. The latest installment, The Conjuring: Last Rites, doesn't stray far from this formula, but it brings back the classic haunted house scares that made the first film so effective.

This time, the story centers on the Becker family, who find their dream home in rural Pennsylvania turning into a nightmare. After their daughter shows signs of a sinister presence, the Warrens are called in to investigate. What they uncover is a dark history tied to the house, involving a vengeful spirit and a cursed object.

Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga once again step comfortably into their roles as the famous paranormal investigators. Their chemistry is as strong as ever, making you believe in their partnership and their determination to help those in need. The film does a great job of blending the personal stakes for the Warrens with the terrifying ordeal the Becker family is going through.

Director Michael Chaves, who also handled The Curse of La Llorona, really leans into building suspense. Instead of relying solely on jump scares, he uses creepy sound design and unsettling visuals to create a constant sense of dread. The scares feel earned, and the story, inspired by another of the Warrens' real-life case files, feels a bit darker and more intense this time around.

While it might not completely reinvent the horror genre, The Conjuring: Last Rites is a solid and scary entry in the series. It’s a welcome return to the classic haunting narrative that fans fell in love with, delivering plenty of chills and a compelling story that will keep you on the edge of your seat. It’s a definite must-watch if you’re looking for a good old-fashioned ghost story.
