Following the recent extradition of Tahawwur Rana to India, a tweet posted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2011, when he was Gujarat's Chief Minister, has gone viral. The tweet criticized the United States for acquitting Rana in relation to the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks.

Modi wrote on June 10, 2011: "US declaring Tahawwur Rana innocent in Mumbai attack has disgraced the sovereignty of India & it is a 'major foreign policy setback'."

Background of the Case and Extradition Timeline

Rana, a Pakistani-origin Canadian businessman, had been acquitted by a U.S. federal jury in 2011 of charges linking him directly to the 2008 Mumbai attacks. The verdict was seen as a diplomatic and legal blow to Indian efforts to establish ISI’s involvement.

However, Rana was convicted in 2013 on separate terror-related charges and sentenced to 14 years in a U.S. prison. India formally requested his extradition in 2019, with the U.S. Supreme Court approving it in 2023.

Reactions to PM Modi's 2011 Remarks

Several users on social media praised Modi's foresight and commitment to national security. Comments like “Another promise has been fulfilled today” and “Modi was passionate about India’s interests even in 2011” gained traction. Some even shared memes to celebrate the event.

Rana’s Arrival and Interrogation by NIA

Tahawwur Rana arrived in India on Thursday and was immediately placed under arrest. On Friday, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) presented him before the Patiala House NIA Special Court in Delhi, which granted an 18-day custody for further interrogation.

Rana, known to be a close associate of David Coleman Headley—the main accused in the 26/11 attacks—is expected to provide crucial information about the planning and execution of the attacks.
