The Supreme Court of India has denied Ranveer Allahbadia’s request to have his passport released, stating that the matter will only be reconsidered after the completion of the ongoing investigation. The YouTuber and podcaster is under scrutiny for controversial remarks made on the show India's Got Latent, particularly comments regarding "sex and parents".
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta informed the court that the investigation is expected to conclude within two weeks.
Interim Protection from Arrest Extended
While the passport release was denied, the Supreme Court extended Allahbadia’s interim protection from arrest in multiple police cases filed in Mumbai, Guwahati, and Jaipur. This protection was initially granted last month on the condition that Allahbadia submit his passport.
The restriction has prevented the creator from traveling abroad for international professional commitments, including live shows and collaborations.
Sharp Court Criticism Over Controversial Remarks
The court expressed displeasure over the nature of Allahbadia’s remarks, stating, “There is something dirty in his mind that is spread by this programme.” The comments in question, made during an episode of India’s Got Latent, sparked public and legal backlash.
In response, Allahbadia gave an undertaking promising to uphold "decency" in future content. He stressed that the passport restriction was negatively impacting his career and income, particularly international opportunities.
Allahbadia Cooperating with Authorities
Solicitor General Mehta acknowledged that Allahbadia has been cooperative, having appeared before officials in Guwahati and the National Commission for Women. Mehta also noted the YouTuber’s commitment to producing respectful content going forward.
Debate Continues Over Expression and Media Ethics
The case has reignited discussions around freedom of speech, digital content regulation, and the ethical boundaries of online entertainment. As the investigation nears conclusion, the final decision on Allahbadia’s passport and legal status remains pending.
