Sunil Chhetri steps back from retirement

AIFF announced on Thursday the news of Indian football veteran Sunil Chhetri coming out of retirement to aid India during the next international window which starts March 2025.

Chhetri has been named alongside 25 other players for the March FIFA international window, and he is set to make his comeback in Indian colours on March 25 when he faces Bangladesh in the third round of the AFC Asian Cup 2027 qualifiers. This was announced by Coach Manolo Marquez.  

Chhetri, who is India’s all-time leading scorer, confirmed in June of last year that he would be stepping away from international football after the country’s goalless draw with Kuwait during the FIFA World Cup 2026 qualification rounds.
