UCC: Top Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) sources on Friday (July 12) said that the Narendra Modi government is not keen to bring any law related to the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) through Parliament and would instead prefer states to bring their laws. The party is hopeful that after Uttarakhand, other BJP-ruled states will also adopt it soon, said sources on condition of anonymity. States like Gujarat and Assam are already in the process of passing the UCC law.
This February, BJP-ruled Uttarakhand passed the UCC Bill, becoming the first state in India to implement a Uniform Civil Code. It includes equal laws for marriage, divorce, and inheritance for all religions. Meanwhile, Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal on Friday said he would wait for the Law Commission’s assessment on the issue. Last month, he had said the issue was still on the government’s agenda.
Suspicion of RSS ally and All India Muslim Personal Law Board
The All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) was one of the groups that sought public opinion on the controversial issue of UCC after the 22nd Law Commission sought it. Even the Vanvasi Kalyan Ashram, an RSS affiliate that focuses on the welfare of members of scheduled tribes in remote areas of India, had told News18 last year that they too had reservations over the issue. The RSS-affiliated organization was skeptical of issues of marriage and property rights among tribals.
BJP’s allies gave hints regarding UCC
The BJP, which is in its third term as the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government, does not have a simple majority and is dependent on its allies, including the Telugu Desam Party and the Janata Dal (United). The JD(U) has earlier indicated that a decision on the UCC would require consensus.
