Vaibhav Suryavanshi Shines with the Ball as East Zone Secures Crushing Victory in Two and a Half Days
The opening quarter-final of the Duleep Trophy 2026 witnessed a dominant display of cricket as the Ishan Kishan-led East Zone secured a comprehensive victory over North East Zone by an innings and 210 runs. Played at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru, the match concluded in just two and a half days, highlighting East Zone's absolute superiority across all departments.
Mammoth First-Innings Total Powered by Centuries
Winning the toss, North East Zone elected to field first. Young prodigy Vaibhav Suryavanshi opened the innings but failed to make a major impact with the bat, getting dismissed for 8 runs after hitting two boundaries.
However, stellar batting performances quickly anchored the innings. Sudeep Kumar Gharami played a magnificent knock of 146 runs, while all-rounder Shahbaz Ahmed anchored the team with a brilliant 167. A crucial half-century (55) from Kumar Kushagra further propelled East Zone to a commanding total of 467 runs in their first innings, overshadowing a rare low score by captain Ishan Kishan.
Clinical Bowling Collapse Forces Follow-On
Faced with a massive target, the North East Zone batting lineup crumbled under pressure. In their first innings, they were bundled out for just 111 runs, unable to avoid the follow-on. Abhijit Sarkar spearheaded the bowling attack with an impressive five-wicket haul, supported well by Shahbaz Ahmed, who claimed three wickets.
Vaibhav Suryavanshi Shines with the Ball in Second Innings
Forced to bat again, North East Zone experienced a similar collapse, folding for 146 runs in their second innings. While the batsmen struggled, young Vaibhav Suryavanshi made his mark with the ball, picking up two wickets while conceding only 11 runs in his three-over spell. Spinner Anukul Roy also starred with a five-wicket haul.
With this resounding win by an innings and 210 runs, East Zone has officially punched its ticket to the semi-finals of the Duleep Trophy, where squad members will look to carry this winning momentum forward.
