Tokyo Olympian Shivpal Singh Handed 10-Year Doping Ban: Major Blow Ends Star Javelin Thrower's Career
In what comes as a massive setback for Indian athletics, star javelin thrower and Tokyo Olympian Shivpal Singh has been handed a severe 10-year ban by the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) following a second anti-doping rule violation. The harshest punishment ever meted out by the agency essentially marks the end of the 31-year-old athlete's competitive career.
A History of Doping Violations
Shivpal's career has faced repeated disciplinary hurdles over the years. Initially, NADA had imposed a four-year ban on the javelin thrower in August 2022 (backdated to 2021) after he tested positive for a banned substance. However, following a successful appeal by the athlete, a NADA panel reduced the suspension to one year in January 2023.
This reduction allowed Shivpal to make a competitive comeback in April 2023, where he even secured a bronze medal at the Inter-State Championships. Unfortunately, this latest ruling stems from a second anti-doping rule violation, carrying a decade-long suspension that leaves virtually no window for an athletic return.
Career Highlights and Rising Doping Concerns in India
During the peak of his career, Shivpal Singh established himself as one of India's premier javelin throwers. He clinched a prestigious silver medal at the 2019 Asian Championships with an impressive personal throw of 86.23 meters and proudly represented India at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
However, his downfall highlights a broader, troubling trend of rising doping offenses within Indian sports. In recent months, several prominent athletes—including sprinter MV Jilna, who faced a provisional suspension for a second doping infringement, and 2018 Asian Games heptathlon medalist Swapna Barman—have also been found guilty of using prohibited substances.
