South Africa announces squad for ODI series, star all-rounder returns

Cricket South Africa (CSA) has officially announced a strong 16-member squad for the upcoming three-match ODI series against Australia, scheduled to kick off later this month. Led by regular captain Temba Bavuma, the squad features exciting additions and notable comebacks, most prominently the return of dynamic bowling all-rounder Gerald Coetzee. However, the team will miss the services of pace spearhead Kagiso Rabada, who remains sidelined due to injury alongside left-arm pacer Nandre Burger.

Gerald Coetzee Makes Welcome Return After Injury Hiatus

The biggest talking point of the squad selection is the inclusion of Gerald Coetzee, who has not featured in ODI cricket since the 2023 World Cup due to a prolonged battle with injuries. Having recently proven his match fitness by bowling impressive spells in a four-day fixture against Bangladesh A, Coetzee is set to bolster the Proteas pace attack alongside Lungi Ngidi, Marco Jansen, and Corbin Bosch. Meanwhile, the fast-bowling department faces setbacks as Nandre Burger misses out, and Lutho Sipamla was forced to withdraw from consideration following a hamstring injury sustained during the tri-series in Namibia.

Schedule, Key Absences, and Full Squad Details

The high-voltage bilateral series between South Africa and Australia begins on September 24 in Durban, marking the Proteas' first home ODI assignment since hosting Pakistan in December 2024. The second ODI will follow on September 27, with the tour concluding on September 30. Notably, star batsman Aiden Markram will only be available for the second and third matches of the series, while hard-hitting batter Triston Stubbs returns to the fold alongside veteran campaigner David Miller and wicketkeeper-batter Quinton de Kock.
