Qatar make history as Khoukhi salvages dramatic draw
Qatar earned their first-ever FIFA World Cup point after captain Boualem Khoukhi struck deep into stoppage time to salvage a dramatic 1-1 draw against Switzerland in a Group B encounter at Levi's Stadium here on Thursday IST.
Switzerland appeared set for victory after striker Breel Embolo converted a penalty in the 17th minute following a foul by goalkeeper Meshaal Abunada on Remo Freuler.
The Swiss dominated much of the contest and created a host of chances, repeatedly threatening to extend their lead. Embolo, Ruben Vargas and Johan Manzambi all came close as Switzerland piled pressure on the Qatari defence.
Despite enjoying the bulk of possession and registering numerous attempts on goal, Switzerland failed to find a decisive second strike. Their wastefulness proved costly as Qatar remained in the contest.
The breakthrough for the hosts came in the fourth minute of added time. Ahmed Al Ganehi delivered a precise cross from the left and captain Boualem Khoukhi rose highest at the far post to power a header beyond goalkeeper Gregor Kobel, sparking wild celebrations among the Qatar players and supporters.
The late equaliser denied Switzerland what would have been a winning start and ensured Qatar secured a historic first point at the World Cup.
Switzerland finished the match with a significant advantage in chances created and expected goals, but Qatar's resilience and Khoukhi's stoppage-time heroics earned a memorable draw.
The result leaves Group B finely poised, with all four teams level on one point after the opening round of matches. Switzerland will next face Bosnia and Herzegovina, while Qatar take on co-hosts Canada.
