The International Cricket Council (ICC) has taken disciplinary action against Sri Lankan spinner Prabath Jayasuriya following an incident on the concluding day of play in the second Test match against India in Colombo. Jayasuriya has been officially reprimanded and handed one demerit point for breaching player conduct regulations.
Breach of ICC Code of Conduct
According to the official match summary, Jayasuriya was found to have violated Article 2.2 of the ICC Code of Conduct, which governs the abuse of cricket equipment, clothing, ground fixtures, and fittings during an international fixture.
The incident occurred after Jayasuriya was dismissed off the final delivery of the day during Sri Lanka's first innings. While walking off the field toward the pavilion, he struck the boundary wedges with his bat. On-field umpires Ahsan Raza and Sharfuddoula Ibne Shahid reported the breach, and match referee Andy Pycroft subsequently imposed the sanction. Because Jayasuriya admitted to the offense and accepted the penalty, no formal disciplinary hearing was required. Since this marks his first offense within a 24-month period, no immediate suspension was applied.
Third Player Sanctioned in the Colombo Test
Jayasuriya's sanction makes him the third player from the ongoing Colombo Test to face disciplinary action from the ICC. Earlier in the match, India opener Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sri Lanka fast bowler Asitha Fernando were penalized following a heated on-field exchange during India's first innings after Fernando dismissed Jaiswal.
Match Status: Sri Lanka Trails on Day 3
On the cricketing front, Sri Lanka faced an uphill battle as play progressed into Day 3 of the second Test. Trailing by a substantial margin, the hosts experienced early setbacks before a stabilizing partnership between Pasindu Sooriyabandara and Kamindu Mendis helped steady the innings. Sooriyabandara contributed a solid 80 runs before falling to Ravindra Jadeja, while subsequent lower-order resilience brought Sri Lanka past the 200-run mark as both teams battled for control in the World Test Championship fixture.
