Asian Games 2026: Neeraj Chopra Eyes Golden Hat-Trick as India Announces Its Largest Athletics Contingent
As the excitement surrounding recent major sporting events settles, attention shifts toward the upcoming Asian Games. Scheduled to take place in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, from September 19 to October 4, the multi-sport quadrennial event is set to feature top athletes from across the continent.
The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports has officially approved a robust 492-member Indian contingent, featuring 73 elite track and field athletes—marking India's largest-ever athletics delegation for the games. Leading this formidable squad is two-time Olympic medalist Neeraj Chopra, who will spearhead the men's javelin team as he sets his sights on a historic golden hat-trick at the Asian Games.
Star-Studded Squad and Defending Champions
The Indian athletics contingent boasts immense experience and talent, including 16 medalists from the previous Hangzhou Asian Games. Among them are five individual reigning champions who will return to defend their titles on continental soil.
Key defending champions and elite competitors include:
Avinash Sable: Returning following an injury-affected season, Sable aims to replicate his stellar performance in middle- and long-distance events.
Tajinderpal Singh Toor: Seeking his third consecutive gold medal in the men's shot put event.
Parul Chaudhary: Scheduled for a demanding multi-event schedule covering middle and long-distance tracks.
Annu Rani: Defending her crown in the women's javelin throw.
The team also features established international performers such as Jyothi Yarraji, Murali Sreeshankar, Tejaswin Shankar, Gulvir Singh, and members of the gold-winning men's 4x400m relay squad.
Comprehensive Contingent and Preparations
Athletes across various disciplines have finalized their training schedules as they prepare to match or exceed India's record-breaking performance at Hangzhou 2023, where the nation secured 29 medals in athletics alone. With rigorous preparations managed by national sports federations and the Sports Authority of India, the contingent aims to showcase exceptional competitiveness across sprint, field, and distance categories.
