Suspense crime, Digital Desk : As criticism from his party colleagues continues, Congress’ Shashi Tharoor has stressed that caution and priority should be given to the delegation's current mission. He also accentuated the need to project India’s zero tolerance on terrorism.
Tharoor is spearheading one of the seven Indian delegations who have been set with the responsibility of explaining India's counter terrorism posture outside the country. He told The Indian Express, “This is a time now for us to focus on our mission. In a democratic society, debate is indeed healthy, but at this point, we need to honor our obligations. We will attend to our colleagues and the press once we return home.”
Response of Congress to Tharoor Supporting Sindoor Operation
Tharoor came in support of India’s recent military action post the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22. While addressing the Indian American audience in New York, he emphasized that as a member of the opposition, he was speaking from the government’s angle.
In another function in Panama, he observed Operation Sindoor and noted that it was the very first time India did cross the LoC to execute a surgical strike at a terrorist facility. According to Tharoor, this response was much different from other military responses such as the Kargil war, and during the Kargil conflict.
Ulterior Motives Within the Congress Party
Tharoor’s remarks received some notice within his party. Senior Congress leader Pawan Khera posted a video on social media of Manmohan Singh where he is describing appreciation of “surgical strikes” done during his tenure as prime minister and also mentions that multiple ones were done while he was in office. The post clearly sought dissatisfaction, even if it was nuanced.
Another Congress leader, Jairam Ramesh, did not like how the government unilaterally decided with no cross-party discussion the members of the delegation. He labeled the choice as “unfortunate,” regrettable, and part of “cheap political games.” In Ramesh’s narrative, these are stunts that the Congress Party will not stoop so low as to partake in.
