Shabana Azmi had always had an on and off relationship with the film industry but her spectacular return in Netflix's project Dabba Cartel left her fans awestruck. The crime thriller series was bound to receive attention due to its fascinating plot, its strong characters, and a lot of twists. Nevertheless, the controversy was similar to that of Saas, Bahu Aur Flamingo where Dimple Kapadia played the protagonist too.

In her latest chat with India Today, Shabana has opened up on this triangulated controversy and highlighted why both series are distinct. The actress claimed, “Before the show was released I was personally frightened that the reality television show would be compared with us.”

Nonetheless, Shabana was very certain that her son’s wife, Shibani Akhtar who is also the show’s creator, would carry the series with grace. She said, “Shibani was confident and assured me that the allegations would not arise. When I saw the show, I was relieved because she turned out to be right, which is comforting to know. It was a fantastic show and very well made, but like I said, it is quite different from our show.”

Dabba Cartel, written and directed by Hitesh Bhatia, stars Shabana Azmi, Gajraj Rao, Jyotika, Shalini Pandey, Nimisha Sajayan, Sai Tamhankar, Jisshu Sengupta, Lillete Dubey and Bhupendra Singh Jadawat.

From Excel Entertainment, the film is co-produced by Ritesh Sidhwani, Farhan Akhthar, Kassim Jagmagia, and Shibani Akhtar along with Abbas Raza Khan and Sunitha Ram. The story follows five housewives who, set in the opulent 1960s Mumbai, run a high-stakes cartel where style, ambition, love, friendship and betrayal are the ingredients of their wicked cartel.

Dabba Cartel can now be streamed on Netflix.
