Sergey Brin: AI Will Be More Transformative Than the Internet or Mobile Revolutions:

Suspense crime, Digital Desk : The repercussions of artificial intelligence will surpass those of the mobile and internet revolutions put together, said Google co-founder Sergey Brin during an impromptu visit at Google I/O 2025 on May 21.

While speaking, Brin mentioned the significance of artificial intelligence during “fireside chats,” held between Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis and journalist Alex Kantrowitz, stating, “computer scientist, it's a unique time to be alive. Any professional within the domain needs to shift complete focus to AI. There has never existed a greater technological opportunity and challenge.”

Web 1.0 described by Brin alongside partaking in the mobile charge was “exciting,” but in Brin’s words, “scientifically far more exciting” is the current revolution around AI. After OpenAI’s release of ChatGPT, all of industry surged, which prompted Brin to rejoin Google in 2023 to work on their AI initiatives.

Describing my current role, Brin shared in jest: “I torture people like Demis.” He went on to share, “I am in the office almost every day, collaborating directly with teams building Gemini models, pre-training, and post-training. Additionally, I work on multimodals like our video generation model, Veo 3.”

The passion Brin stated is the technical part of AI is furthered by him saying that he prefers looking into algorithms and observing how they change and grow over time.

While pondering over the past failure of the Google Glass project, Brin acknowledged the mistakes he made. “My failure was not understanding the supply chains for consumer electronics and the the intricacies of large scale production,” he mentioned. He still, however, has faith in the possible advancement of smart glasses, particularly with the development of AI.

Brin also pointed out that the new augmented reality glasses for AI have an improved shape that makes them look like regular glasses. “AI can ensure that these glasses are more useful without drawing too much attention,” he noted.

On May 21, Google announced wars with Warby Parker and Gentle Monster which were set to manufacture AI integrated smart glasses. The devices will use the new operating system called Android XR which is a mixed reality headset and smartglasses system integrated with Gemini.

Google is also a partnered with Samsung to aid in building a reference hardware system and software for the Android XR ecosystem, expanding development resources. Building for the platform can start later this year.
