Suspense crime, Digital Desk : Bollywood star Sanjay Dutt once opened up about the incredibly challenging conditions he faced during his imprisonment, revealing that he felt he was treated more harshly than other convicts. The actor, who served time in connection with the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case for illegal arms possession, described a grueling daily existence designed to make an example out of him due to his celebrity status.
Dutt recounted his stark diet, stating, "I ate chane ki dal (chickpea lentils) for a whole year." In another jail, his sustenance was largely rajgira (amaranth), a food item he wasn't even familiar with before his incarceration. He emphasized that his treatment wasn't lenient; instead, authorities seemingly wanted to demonstrate that even high-profile individuals wouldn't receive special privileges.
Despite the severity, Dutt found ways to cope and even contribute. He engaged in manual labor, making paper bags, and earned a small amount of money. In a poignant detail, he mentioned saving this meager income to buy a gift for his sister Priya Dutt for Raksha Bandhan, a festival celebrating the bond between siblings.
The actor acknowledged the physical toll and transformation, noting significant weight loss and even developing a "six-pack" due to the rigorous conditions and limited food. However, he firmly maintained his innocence regarding any involvement in terrorism, stating he was punished for possessing an illegal weapon and had paid the price for his mistake. Dutt also touched upon his past struggles with drug addiction, indicating that his time in jail, while severe, was part of a journey of confronting his past and learning from it. He expressed that while the experience was incredibly tough, it ultimately made him a stronger person.
