For over 30 years, Salman Khan has won the hearts of audiences with his persona, captivating action sequences, and record-breaking box office collections. While he prepares for the release of his new movie Sikandar, let us examine his life from the very beginning to one of the most celebrated stars of Indian cinema.
The emergence of Salman Khan
ankhan debuted in the film industry with ‘Biwi Ho To Aisi’ in the year of 1988 but in his movie Maine Pyar Kiya released in 1989, which made him an overnight star. Salman captured the audience's attention by lovingly saying “Prem” and later became the pinnacle of romance for Hindi cinema. With every romantic film he did, he was the Hero of Bollywood romantic films. His immense popularity after the film ‘Maine Pyaar Kiya’ cemented his position in the industry.
His fans loved it when he gave tremendous hits in the 90s. People still love the films Baaghi (1990), Saajan (1991), Hum Aapke Hain Koun…!(1994) due to the variety of these films. They proved that Salman can do action and comic films too with Karan Arjun (1995), Judwaa (1997). And then came the evergreen flick Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam where he melted the hearts of audience with his performance.
Revamping into an action star
Salman had his fair share of lows and highs during the early 2000s. Although he was successful in films with Tere Naam (2003) and Mujhse Shaadi Karog (2004), others like Chal Mere Bhai (2000) and London Dreams (2009) failed to make an impact. Nonetheless, he remained a fan favorite and used Partner (2007) and Wanted (2009) to successfully make a comeback. This latter film is what transformed him into B-Town's leading action star.
By the decade's end, Salman had rebuilt himself and, with the addition of Dabangg (2010) featuring the iconic Chulbul Pandey, his action hero figure was cemented. The blockbuster success of the film acted as a foundation for the new era that followed.
The new box office king
If the 1990s earned him the title of a star, the 2010s truly gave him the title of TBH's undisputed king. Following Dabangg, Salman gave back to back hits, each successively raising the bar further for his stardom. The films Ready (2011), Bodyguard (2011), Ek Tha Tiger (2012), and Dabangg 2 (2012) cemented him further as Bollywood's most bankable actor.
Even for action films, Bajrangi Bhaijaan (2015) was a masterpiece and showcased his emotional prowess which won both critical and commercial success. The film is still among his highest earners. He continued to dominate with Sultan (2016) and Tiger Zinda Hai (2017) proving that no one comes close to his unmatched star power.
While it may be true that Salman Khan suffered some unfortunate box office failures recently, his presence still remains unmoved. Bharat (2019), Radhe (2021), and Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan (2023) were all received with mixed emotions, but his success has never faded. Not to mention the release of Tiger 3 (2023) renewed faith in his action-hero image and made excellent earnings.
This Eid all the attention will shift to Sikandar by AR Murugadoss which is speculated to feature heavy amounts of action, drama, and a Salman Khan like never seen before.
