Hartalika Teej Vrat 2026: Date, Pradosh Puja Timings, and the Sacred Legend of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati
The highly auspicious and austere festival of Hartalika Teej will be observed on Monday, September 14, 2026, falling on the third day (Tritiya Tithi) of the Shukla Paksha in the Bhadrapada month. Celebrated primarily by married women and young maidens across India, this sacred festival involves observing a rigorous Nirjala (waterless) fast dedicated to the divine union of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. According to Vedic panchang calculations, the festival aligns with the Udaya Tithi, while the core worship rituals are performed during the sacred Pradosh period under the spiritually potent Hasta Nakshatra. On this day, devotees craft clay idols of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, decorate them with fresh flowers and leaves, and recite the legendary Vrat Katha to invoke marital bliss, family harmony, and longevity for their partners.
The Divine Dialogue on Mount Kailash: Unveiling Past Merits
The legendary narrative of Hartalika Teej originates from a profound conversation on Mount Kailash, where Lord Shiva sat in his celestial court alongside his devoted followers, including Nandi, Veerbhadra, Bhringi, and Shringi, accompanied by Goddess Parvati. Mother Parvati respectfully inquired of the Lord, "Swami, I am deeply blessed to have you as my eternal life partner, but I wish to know what supreme virtues and good deeds I performed in past lives to attain a husband like you. As the omniscient one, please reveal this truth to me." Smiling at her devotion, Lord Shiva responded by declaring that Parvati had undertaken exceptionally pious penances during the bright fortnight of the month of Bhado on a day blessed with the most auspicious celestial alignments—comparing its purity to the sun among planets, the Ganga among rivers, and the Mahabharata among sacred scriptures.
Goddess Parvati’s Severe Penance and Narada’s Proposal
Prompted by Lord Shiva's revelation, Goddess Parvati requested a detailed account of her earthly life as Princess Uma, the daughter of King Himachal. In her youth, Parvati had retreated into the Himalayan caves with her trusted companion to perform rigorous penance to attain Lord Shiva as her consort. Enduring scorching summers, torrential monsoon rains, and freezing winters, she abstained from food and water, surviving solely on fallen tree leaves until her physical frame grew frail. Witnessing her extreme austerities, King Himachal became deeply distressed and sought her marriage. At that juncture, the celestial sage Narada arrived, bearing a marriage proposal from Lord Vishnu, stating that the deity from Vaikuntha wished to wed the princess. Overjoyed, King Himachal accepted the proposal on her behalf.
The Escape to the Secret Cave and the Creation of the Sand Lingam
Upon learning of her impending marriage to Lord Vishnu against her heart's desire, Goddess Parvati broke down in grief before her confidante. Understanding her deep devotion to Lord Shiva, the loyal friend devised a plan and escorted Parvati deep into a secluded Himalayan cave where even King Himachal could not trace them. Meanwhile, discovering her missing, King Himachal collapsed in despair, lamenting his inability to fulfill his promise to Lord Vishnu. Inside the remote cave, Parvati maintained an intense waterless and foodless fast, crafting a sacred Shiva Lingam out of river sand on the Tritiya Tithi of Bhadrapada Shukla Paksha under the Hasta Nakshatra. Her absolute devotion and rigorous worship caused the cosmic realms and Lord Shiva's divine throne to tremble, compelling the Almighty to manifest before her and grant her eternal wish.
