Suspense crime, Digital Desk : BENGALURU: What was meant to be a day of celebration for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) fans ended in tragedy, as a stampede during the team’s victory parade claimed multiple lives — including that of Devi, a young tech professional and devoted RCB supporter.
Devi, originally from Tamil Nadu, had been living and working in Bengaluru after completing her studies in the city. Passionate about cricket and fiercely loyal to RCB, she had never missed a match since moving to Bengaluru. “She was a huge Virat Kohli fan,” said a close friend, who was visibly shaken.
Hearing about the team’s victory celebrations at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, Devi was eager to attend. Tickets were being distributed online for entry, but by the time she tried, they had run out. Still determined, she messaged her friend, “I’m taking the metro!” hoping to get a ticket at the venue. That was the last time anyone heard from her.
Her friend shared, “She pestered her boss for time off and finally got permission around 2:30 PM. She was so excited. Her laptop is still on her desk, and her bags are there — but she is not.”
The stampede at the venue occurred amid overwhelming crowds and inadequate crowd control. Emergency responders contacted Devi’s emergency contact from official records. Her friend said, “We got the call from the hospital. We rushed there immediately. Her parents are being contacted… we don’t know how to break this to them.”
What was to be a proud moment for RCB fans has now turned into a scene of sorrow and disbelief for many, especially those close to the victims. The investigation is ongoing into the lapses that led to the stampede.
