Vedanta’s ₹1,908 Crore Masterstroke: Massive Oil Boost in Rajasthan to Fortify India’s Energy Independence
In a massive boost to the nation's energy sector, billionaire Anil Agarwal’s Vedanta Group is making a strategic ₹1,908 crore ($200 million) investment in northern Rajasthan. Spearheaded by Vedanta Oil & Gas Limited (VOGL), this ambitious capital injection aims to ramp up domestic crude oil production, accelerate resource-to-reserve conversion programs, and dramatically enhance recovery rates across India's premier onshore hydrocarbon assets by fiscal year 2027.
Celebrating 17 Years of the Legendary Mangala Field
Located in Barmer, Rajasthan, the iconic Mangala field stands as a testament to the immense potential of India's onshore hydrocarbon reserves. Discovered in 2004 by Vedanta subsidiary Cairn India, the field marked a historic milestone in the country's energy landscape. Marking 17 years since its historic "first oil" milestone, the Mangala field continues to be a cornerstone of domestic production, significantly lessening the nation's reliance on crude oil imports.
The broader Rajasthan asset base—encompassing the prolific Mangala, Bhagyam, and Aishwarya (MBA) fields—holds an estimated total potential reserve of 570 million barrels of oil equivalent (MMboe), anchoring India’s long-term energy security.
Advanced Technologies to Double Recovery Rates to 60%
Detailing the roadmap for this major financial commitment, Jim Johnny Gast, Interim CEO of Vedanta Oil & Gas, emphasized that the multi-million-dollar investment focuses on unlocking the next phase of sustainable production.
Targeting 60% Recovery: Through cutting-edge subsurface technologies, targeted workovers, strategic sidetracks, and advanced well interventions, Vedanta aims to double the recovery factor in the Mangala field from the current 30% up to 60%.
ASP Injection and Tight Oil Potential: Cairn has successfully expanded its commercial Alkaline Surfactant Polymer (ASP) injection capacity at the Mangla well pads. Furthermore, the region harbors approximately 100 to 200 MMboe of tight oil potential.
Unlocking Future Reserves for National Growth
Through aggressive resource-to-reserve conversion programs, Vedanta anticipates unlocking an additional 200 to 300 MMboe in the coming years. Backed by enhanced subsurface visibility, modern engineering, and strategic industry partnerships, the Barmer basin is well-positioned to maintain a robust, long-term production profile that directly powers India's economic resilience and energy self-reliance.
