The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has surged ahead of the opposition Congress in Rajasthan's high-stakes urban body elections, clinching 4,179 wards compared to Congress's 3,613 and securing a clear majority in four out of the state's 10 municipal corporations. Following the conclusion of voting held across two phases on September 9 and September 11, political strategists from both major parties have shifted into high gear. In Bharatpur Municipal Corporation—the home district headquarters of Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma—the BJP failed to secure a majority as independent candidates captured 36 of the 65 seats, leaving the BJP with 20 and Congress with 7. Meanwhile, Congress pulled off significant victories by securing a majority in Bikaner, the home turf of Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal, and triumphing in Jhalawar, the political stronghold of former Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje and her son Dushyant Singh. In Jodhpur, the home constituency of former Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot and Union Tourism Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, both BJP and Congress fought to an exact tie with 44 seats each. While CM Bhajan Lal Sharma lauded the results as a public endorsement of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's development vision ahead of the 2028 assembly political landscape, both parties now face intense battles to woo independent winners.
