Punjab Elections 2027: Inside BJP’s Masterplan to Conquer the State Solo
As the countdown to the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections begins, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is aggressively overhauling its electoral playbook. In what will be its first major attempt to secure the state entirely on its own—without its former ally, the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD)—the saffron party is leaving no stone unturned. By expanding its social coalitions, poaching heavyweight leaders from rival factions, and strengthening its grassroots network, the BJP is determined to emerge as the primary political force in Punjab, directly challenging the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Congress.
Despite winning just two seats with a 6.6 per cent vote share in the 2022 Assembly elections, the BJP saw a significant surge in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, capturing an 18.65 per cent vote share despite failing to secure a seat. Viewing this upward trajectory as a launchpad, the party's central leadership has put a meticulous, long-term strategy into motion.
Building Strategic Social Coalitions
A cornerstone of the BJP’s 2027 roadmap is its rigorous outreach to the Scheduled Caste community, with a special focus on the Ravidassia sect. The groundwork for this was laid earlier when Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his February 1 visit for Guru Ravidas Jayanti, announced the renaming of the Adampur Airport after Guru Ravidas and the launch of the Shri Guru Ravidas Ji Maharaj Express connecting Jalandhar and Varanasi.
Capitalising on this momentum, the Punjab BJP has launched the "Samrasta Sankalp Abhiyan" (Social Harmony Pledge Campaign). Scheduled to run from Guru Purnima through Magh Purnima next year, the campaign is designed to deeply embed GurRavidas's’s message of equality and social harmony across the state's demographics.
Poaching Heavyweights: The Raghav Chadha Factor
The BJP recognises that localised, influential leadership is the key to unlocking Punjab's electoral puzzle. In a massive political coup ahead of 2027, the party has successfully inducted seven AAP Rajya Sabha members, most notably Raghav Chadha. Once considered one of AAP National Convenor Arvind Kejriwal's closest confidants, Chadha's defection is a seismic shift in the state's political landscape. Armed with an intimate understanding of the ruling party's electoral machinery and vulnerabilities, Chadha is expected to be a pivotal architect in dismantling AAP's stronghold and executing the BJP's statewide campaign. Since 2022, the BJP has also actively absorbed a steady stream of senior Congress leaders, assigning them crucial organisational roles to fortify booth-level management.
Major Bets: Keval Singh Dhillon and Ravneet Singh Bittu
In a calculated move to woo the crucial Sikh vote bank, the BJP replaced Sunil Jakhar with veteran politician Keval Singh Dhillon as the new Punjab BJP President. As the party's first Jat Sikh state president, Dhillon wields significant political clout in the Malwa region—the very same territory that serves as Chief Minister Bhagwan Mann's political fortress.
Simultaneously, Ravneet Singh Bittu, who jumped ship from the Congress, is being aggressively positioned as a primary face of the BJP in Punjab. Despite suffering a defeat in the recent Lok Sabha elections, Bittu was elevated to the Union Council of Ministers. With his Rajya Sabha tenure drawing to a close, internal speculation suggests he will soon be handed a major organisational mandate to steer the party's offensive heading into the 2027 electoral battle.
